Explore vignettes from two millennia on our autumn travels through New Mexico and southern Colorado. Here is a sampling:
• Throughout time: Fall Sandhill Crane migration. View the cranes during their stopover in the wetlands of southern Colorado. Visit White Sands National Monument.
• 1150. Visit the pueblo of Acoma, continuously occupied since about 1150.
• 1600. Visit the Spanish capital of the southwest, Santa Fe.
• 1870. Ride the remnant of the Denver & Rio Grande narrow gauge railway system built to connect the silver mines in the Rockies with Denver
• 1942. Visit the "secret city" built by the U.S. Government for development of the Manhattan Project.
• 1945. See "Trinity Site," open to the public just 2 days a year, where the world was ushered into the Atomic Age.
• 2008. New Mexico Rail Runner train begins operation on a newly constructed rail line linking Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Enjoy a ride on this new train.
• Future: Learn about space exploration projects at Los Alamos National Laboratory and New Mexico Museum of Space Exploration.
